Teaching

The Faculty co-ordinates teaching and learning activities primarily through the Courses and Curricula committee and the Teaching and Learning committee. An Associate Head of Faculty (Teaching & Learning) has been appointed to oversee developments in this area.

In 2008 a new range of teaching awards are being made available to Faculty staff. These awards are intended to further encourage quality, innovation & engagement on a variety of levels.

Flexible delivery is an area that the Faculty has been involved with since the early 1990s. Significant developments have occurred in that time. The opening of the Lincoln Marine Science Centre at Port Lincoln in 1995 provided the opportunity to partner with industry and the local community to offer marine research and education off-campus.

The Faculty is also a leading proponent of the use of FLO (Flinders Learning Online) to deliver learning materials online.

Learning materials are delivered in a variety of ways, including:

  • on-campus lectures, tutorials and lab sessions
  • FLO (Flinders Learning Online)
  • Computer Services Unit student computer labs
  • the Information Science & Technology teaching web
  • digital replay of lectures
Most of the online learning material has been developed to supplement on-campus, face-to-face interactions between students and teaching staff. At this stage of development all of our courses require students to be on-campus for most activities.

The Faculty's Online Teaching & Learning strategic plan (pdf) outlines the vision that we have for this activity.

The Faculty offers a wide range of courses ranging from a BSc (Bachelor of Science) which features a simplified structure whilst accommodating a great deal of flexibility, to a number of specialist niche degrees in areas such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.
