Lizards feel climate change

A team of Flinders University biologists under Professor Mike Bull has been studying the pygmy bluetongue and its larger cousin, the sleepy lizard, for almost three decades.

 

Professor Bull’s discoveries about the extraordinary life cycle and habits of the sleepy lizard, including its tendency to pair with a mate for life, earned the lizard a major role in David Attenborough’s reptile documentary series, Life in Cold Blood.

New backing for medical devices brings R&D and industry together

The development and production of high-tech medical devices in South Australia will enter a dynamic new phase with the establishment of a $3.3 million program, based at Flinders University.

 

Flinders will play a lead role in the Medical Devices Partnering Program, which will bring together university researchers with commercial backers, manufacturers and end-users of medical assistive technology.

Engineers to design next generation subsea inspection system for petroleum industry

A new inspection vehicle to monitor the condition of subsea pipelines will be designed and developed by a Flinders University engineering team to meet the growing needs of the offshore petroleum sector.

 

With integrated sonar and video sensing, the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) will not only assess the integrity of pipelines that lie up to 2.5 kilometres below sea level but will also evaluate the changing conditions of the sea-floor.

Flinders Research Centre to boost interest in science

A new Flinders University research centre that aims to change public and student perceptions about science and boost the nation’s prospects of meeting future skills needs was officially opened by the Premier, Mr Mike Rann on 9 January.

The Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century (to be known as Science21) was founded to address declining enrolments in secondary and tertiary studies in the sciences.
