High Schools - Visits to Flinders

 

Flinders Faculty of Science and Engineering has a range of activities available and we are happy to tailor visits to your needs. Visits to Flinders are informative, friendly and as interactive as possible. Please create your own program by choosing a combination of activities. Activities can include:

  • Practical sessions that link to the curriculum (and may include scientific equipment not available in Schools);
  • Interactive tours of our facilities;
  • Current students talking about their experiences at Flinders;
  • Information sessions on career path options in Science and Engineering;
  • Presentations on our current research and degree programs; and
  • much more.

Please note that activities are dependant on availability and some activities may only be available on specific days or may have booking deadlines. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

SchoolDescription
Biological Sciences LizardTour of the School can include all of the following (~30 min duration), but can be modified dependent on time.
  1. The Animal Care Unit
    • Lizard Rooms
      • Explanation of research being conducted
      • Observation of experimental habitat/set up

  2. Aquaculture Tank Rooms
    • Yabbies, clown fish, algae for feed
    • Understand & learn what we are aiming to research

  3. The Marine Aquaria
    • Explanation of research being conducted
    • Observation of the facilities used by our research students and scientists

  4. Teaching laboratories and the school facilities (includes lecture theatres)
Chemistry, Physics & Earth Sciences Students working on the Chemical Murder MysteryA tour of the School can be designed to meet your specific interests, whether they are in Chemistry, Physics or Earth science. Any of the Nanotechnology, Forensic Science, Physics and Earth Science laboratories can be visited with a series of short activities provided along the way.
Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics Robotic dogTour of the School can include the following (~ 30 min duration), but can be modified dependent on time.
  1. Be a student: What is it like to go to a lecture, attend a tut, do a prac

  2. See teaching and the school facilities (includes lecture theatres)

  3. Robotics: Tour the robotics laboratories at the School of Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics at Flinders University. An opportunity to view and learn about mobile robots, hexapods and the industrial robotic arm. Discover the latest technology in our programmable artificial intelligent dog.

  4. Desktop to Main Frame: Follow the computer network from the desktop machine to the main frame processors that service 100s of users concurrently.

Biological Sciences Three options. Selection of one or more of these is possible, dependent on time allocated for the visit.
  1. Introduction to the School of Biological Sciences, our structure, and an overview of all degrees we offer (15 min)

  2. Postgraduate student panel (20 min) - PhD students representing each of the 3 research areas in the School (Molecular Biology and Genetics, Marine Biology, Biodiversity and Conservation) inform students & teachers on:

    • Their experiences as a student at Flinders studying the Biological Sciences;
    • The degree they studied;
    • What their degree qualified them for (giving examples) and career paths they and their friends have chosen;
    • Why they chose to study at Flinders; and
    • What they are doing now and why

    There is time for questions and discussion.

  3. Degree Program Information (20 min) - Presentations are available for high school science faculty teaching staff, career counsellors, class teachers and/or students who have indicated interest in a particular degree program offered through the School of Biological Sciences.

    1. Specialist degree:
      • Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours)
      • Bachelor of Ecotourism
      • Bachelor of Medical Science
      • Bachelor of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation
      • Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology
      • Bachelor of Technology (Aquaculture)

      OR

    2. Degrees within a topic of study:
      • Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Honours). Addresses the majors/minors available & “What can I do with a science degree?”
      • Marine Sciences – BSc(Marine Biol), BTech(Aqua)
      • Biodiversity, Conservation, Evolution – BSc, BSc(Biodiv & Cons), BEcot.
      • The molecular sciences/genetics/ biotechnology/medical science – BBtech(Hons), BSc, BSc(Hons), BMedSci

    Presentations are available for high school science faculty teaching staff, career counsellors, class teachers and/or students who have indicated interest in any of the following degrees:
    • Physics (Bachelor of Science major)
    • Nanotechnology (Bachelor of Science Honours)
    • Chemistry (Bachelor of Science major)
    • Medicinal Chemistry (Bachelor of Science)
    • Forensic and Analytical Chemistry (Bachelor of Technology)
    • Environmental Science (Bachelor of Science)
    • Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources (Bachelor of Science major)
    • Ocean and Climate Science (Bachelor of Science major)
    • Earth Sciences (Bachelor of Science major)
Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics Selection of one or more of these is possible, dependent on time allocated for the visit.
  1. Introduction to the School of Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics, our structure, and an overview of all degrees we offer (15 min)

  2. Undergraduate panel (20 min) - Undergraduates students from the school’s courses (or nominated specific courses) will discuss with students and teachers what it is like studying at Flinders, what it is like studying their particular course and where they see the qualification leading them in the future. There will be time for questions and discussion.

  3. Postgraduate research student panel (20 min) - Similar to the undergraduate panel except the PhD students from the school’s research areas will also discuss their area of research and why they have gone on to higher degree research.

  4. Degree Program Information (~ 20 min duration) - If the visiting school has indicated interest in a particular degree program offered through the School for high school science faculty teaching staff, career counsellors, class teachers and/or students are available on one or more of the awards.
