Aboriginal Summer Schools for Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS) 7-16 January Hopes to inspire Year 10 and 11 students with exceptional capabilities to undertake further study in Science and Technology.

 

Science Summer School7-16 January The Science Summer School will bring together some of Australia’s best Science teachers for a 10 day residential program with leading academics and international keynote speakers.
 
Siemens Science Experience15-17 January Two girls taking samples of red liquidEach year Universities all around Australia offer a 3-day, fun-filled science experience for High School students going on to Year 10. The Flinders event includes hands-on activities in marine biology, robotics, nanotechnology, physics and chemistry.

Palaeontology Week Flinders Tour (PDF) & Map (PDF) 30 March As part of the week long Fossil Festival at the SA Museum Flinders University is hosting a tour. Come behind the scenes - see how fossils are prepared and identified. Listen to palaeontologists and find out how you can become a palaeontologist.
Come and Try Robocup Junior Soccer31 March & 21-22 April Secondary students design and program two robots to compete against an opposing pair of robots by kicking an infra-red transmitting ball into their designated goal. The field is the size of a table tennis table.

 

Science Outside the Square -Nanotech for the Terrified (PDF)15 AprilJoin Flinders University’s Prof Joe Shapter and Brenton Banham, plus CSIROSEC’s Kylie Turton for an entertaining hands-on exploration of the real life science behind nanotechnology at Port Road, Adelaide.

 

Professional Development Evenings3, 10 & 17 JuneFor several years the Faculty has offered organised professional development evening which are designed to provide teachers with an opportunity to build professional relationships, become familiar with career opportunities, and to keep up to date with changes in science and the practice of teaching science..
Chemical Murder Mystery 2008 25, 26, 27, 30 June & 1 July Groups of students attending Chemical Murder MysteryThe Chemical Murder Mystery is a full day forensic science activity for Year 10 students held on the Flinders University Campus.
Practical - Principles of Gel Electrophoresis 23 June - 4 JulyA staple of Biotechnology, this technique is used to separate DNA molecules. Students will use pipettes and the latest electrophoresis apparatus.

Practical - Enzyme Activity Assay 23 June - 4 JulyStudents will do colour-change based assays enabling them to assess enzyme activity, observe substrate specificity in action and determine the effect of destroying enzyme 3-dimensional structure.

Career Counsellors' Day - Engineering Focus 3 July People discussing careersCareer Counsellors' day provides professional development for teaching staff, and career counsellors. They ensure school staff are up-to-date with new courses, changes to courses, campus activities and Flinders University initiatives.
National Youth Science Forum 11 July Students at NYSFAn opportunity of National Youth Science Forum members to visit the Flinders Campus and participate in hands-on Science & Engineering activities.

Courses and Career Open Day 15 & 17 August Having fun at Open DayFor two days our campus life is on display and staff and students are available to discuss, courses, careers and student support. Hear about what we have to offer and have some fun while you are at Flinders with interactive displays, tours, demonstrations and hands-on workshops.
Science Week 16-24 AugustNational Science Week is a national initiative which involves a week of science related activities, events and programs which aim to promote and raise the profile of science amongst the wider community.
Practical - Marine Biology and Ecology 22-26 SeptemberHandle real samples! Students will learn how to calculate a biodiversity index, used by all environmental scientists, based on the marine organisms they isolate. Students will also observe what features enable the critters to adapt to their niche environment.

Practical - Microbiology 22-26 SeptemberHandling of micro-organisms. Students will do microscopy, Gram staining and macro- and microscopically observe environmental samples they will collect on--campus.

Practical - Plant Biodiversity and Physiology 22-26 SeptemberWhat pollinates flowers of different species and why? Students will learn how to deduce this based on the shape, colour and odour of flowers of different plant species. Involves observation, data recording, dissection and microscopy of flowers.
