RESEARCH

Spinner Dolphins (Fiji)

There has been no formal research conducted on spinner dolphins within Fijian waters to date. During 2009 I will be conducting a preliminary examination of spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) residency, distribution and habitat within Fijian waters.

I will employ photo-identification techniques to identify individual dolphins, group size, demographic characteristics (no. of calves, juveniles, adults), distribution, and ranging patterns. Behavioural states (e.g. resting, travelling, foraging) will also be quantified. I will also try to determine if there is site fidelity amongst each given study location; whether there is variability in group structure, size, demographics and density between study locations; and if there are differences in primary behaviour and activity at each study location.

This investigation will give an initial insight into the variability and complexity of this species in Fiji, as well as aiding in developing local monitoring research techniques to assess these populations further, thus having implications on management and conservation on a local and regional scale.
