Are you interested in the exploration of our own world, planet Earth? Many of the opportunities and challenges facing human civilisation today are intimately related to the Earth and to our understanding of this dynamic and ever changing planet. You will discover how the Earth is changing and the consequences for our environment and life on Earth. A major in Earth Science covers the exciting and multidisciplinary areas of water, ocean, atmospheric, geological and geophysical sciences.
In First Year, you will learn about a broad range of topical issues that have direct application to our daily lives and the world around us, such as climate change, volcanoes, sea-level rise, water pollution, energy resources and coastal processes. In Second and Third Year you wit[ have the opportunity to focus your studies in environmental hydrology, or meteorology and oceanography - areas in which career opportunities are strong.
Having completed an Earth Sciences major students will be prepared for professional careers working as environmental consultants, scientists and forecasters (eg with the Bureau of Meteorology) and as scientists with agencies such as the CSIRO and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For those interested in pursuing a career in research, a BSc(Hons) degree in Earth Sciences can lead to a PhD in cutting edge research areas in hydrology, or meteorology and oceanography.
Detailed information on the structure of the major is documented in the Course Information Handbook .
The co-ordinator for this major is John Hutson.
