Bachelor of Technology (Aquaculture)

Matthew
Graduate Bachelor of Technology (Aquaculture)

MatthewThe aquaculture course was integral to me progressing to my current position within Rural Solutions SA. It provided a sound theoretical base which I have been able to expand on with practical work experience. I would not be where I am without it!

I am currently a Senior Consultant with the seafood team for Rural Solutions SA. I am involved in providing high level advice to government, industry and community on issues related to the seafood industry.

Overall, Flinders was able to quickly react to an industry need for formal training in aquaculture in the mid 90's. It has produced a cohort of skilled graduates that are leaders in their professions. I would recommend the Flinders experience to anyone wanting a career in aquatic resource management.

Bachelor of Biotechnology

Matthew Tucker
Graduate Bachelor of Biotechnology

MathewI enjoyed the Biotechnology course because it provided an education in a range of topics including plant, medical and microbial science. The course also established a good environment for study with lecturers from diverse fields, opportunities for specialisation, restricted student numbers and a good social scene!

More than just a basic science degree, the Biotechnology course enhanced its general subject areas by utilizing strong collaborations with industry and other research organizations to give students a real life perspective of how the Biotechnology industry functions. This has helped to direct my own career path, because I used the opportunity to complete my final year of Biotechnology study and subsequently my PhD outside of the University environment. The basis provided by the Biotechnology degree has led me to continue my research career overseas, with the hope that one day I will be able to return to Australia and follow my own biotech-related research interests.

Melissa Gregory
Graduate Bachelor of Biotechnology

MelissaAfter high school, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Biotechnology degree at Flinders University. I was attracted to this course because biotechnology was a relatively new field and an area that was rapidly evolving, particularly in South Australia. The Flinders degree offered a balanced mixture of theory and laboratory based learning. During the three years of course work, a broad range of topics were taught, covering agricultural, environmental, pharmaceutical and medical aspects of biotechnology. A benefit of the hands on skills I gained in practical sessions was the assistance it provided me with to understand the theory I was learning. The importance of scientific research became more apparent while I was completing the degree. I became aware of the diverse pathways biotechnology can lead to. The Honours year is completed in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Biotechnology at Flinders University. It involves spending the year on a novel research project. During Honours I enjoyed getting exciting results and steering my laboratory research in different directions to achieve goals. Because of this I decided to continue in research and I am currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the School of Biological Sciences at Flinders University. I am examining the effect of natural, novel antioxidants on live fish, using diet trials, and fish cell culture systems. Once I have completed my PhD I hope to head overseas to gain more research experience.

Bachelor of Ecotourism

John Gitsham
Graduate Bachelor of Ecotourism

JohnI found Flinders University an interesting and inclusive learning institution that readily accepted mature aged students. The lecturers were supportive and enthusiastic in passing on their knowledge and skills, and were readily available for questions when needed.

I completed my Bachelors degree in Ecotourism from Flinders University at the end of 2006, and I was employed immediately by the Department for Environment and Heritage (National Parks and Wildlife) as a Senior Ranger over at Innes National Park, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.

The Ecotourism degree helped me with the skills required for understanding the day to day operations of a major conservation/tourism/recreational based business. I also acquired new skills in visitor management and a good understanding of the bigger picture required in contemporary worlds best practice in conservation based tourism and management.

The large scientific training component within the Ecotourism degree gave me a sound understanding of biological processes in a conservation context and hence allows me to perform and support scientific research projects within the Park and other regions managed by National Parks and Wildlife (DEH).

Bachelor of Innovation & Enterprise (Science & Technology)

Broderick Matthews
2006 Tertiary Business Person of the Year
Currently studying Bachelor of Innovation & Enterprise (Science & Technology)

BroderickCurrently, I am studying forensic science at Flinders and enjoying the challenges of the work and practicals. However, to give my qualifications a boost I also enrolled in the Bachelor of Innovation and Enterprise (Science and Technology) (BIEST). This unique double degree combination at Flinders is designed to give science students the edge- and it certainly delivers in that respect.

The BIEST involves many aspects of business and innovation such as marketing, economics and entrepreneurship. A part of the degree involves setting up and running your own business through the Young Achievement Australia (YAA) program. You set-up a real business with other students, selling a real product and dealing with real money. From this program I learnt more than I could imagine about “real life” business experiences and business skills and took out YAA’s National Tertiary Business Person of the Year. This award was a fantastic coup for me and means a lot for my future. The effect this award will have on my resume to future employers is a testament to the fantastic YAA program and the BIEST degree.

Sean Colyer
Graduate Bachelor of Innovation & Enterprise (Science & Technology)

SeanSince graduating from the Bachelor of Innovation and Enterprise (Science & Technology) I have been employed as a Software Developer at Alcidion Corporation, an Adelaide based Health Informatics firm. My job is varied and involves software design, programming, testing, customer support, product development, consulting work, process design, sales and marketing.

By far the most valuable aspect of this degree is the work experience component, which opens doors to students that would otherwise be unreachable. A testament to this is the fact that my work placement was at Alcidion and I was offered a full-time position upon completion of my studies.

Bachelor of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation

Ben Ryan
Graduate Bachelor of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation

BenThe degree focussed on ecology but included aspects of GIS and environmental management. It opened my eyes to many national and international environmental issues, but the main benefit was that it helped me to develop a scientific approach to thinking about and dealing with these issues. I enjoyed the entire degree and studying at Flinders. The facilities, lecturers, and other professional staff were great and it was the relaxed atmosphere and other students that made it such a memorable experience. Currently I'm working with Newmont Jundee Operations, a gold mining company as an Environmental Officer. The degree gave me the fundamental skills that I need to complete the various projects I am working on, and has given me a deeper understanding of the environmental aspects of mining and the many environmental regulations that pertain to it.

Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology

Heidi Bartram
Young South Australian of the Year 2005, Graduate Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology

HeidiI met so many amazing people and found all the staff and students to be interested in their research and willing to let you be involved. Students were highly valued and it was always easy to find motivation. Not only did I learn all the skills and knowledge I would need to develop my career for the last few years, but I had fund doing it!

My Science degree was incredibly valuable to my career as it enabled me to get a feel for many different areas of science then choose and study the specific topics that interested me most. It was through this process that I developed my enthusiasm and knowledge for conservation.

I have worked in a number of different jobs both in Australia and overseas - I moved to Vanuatu to work as a Fisheries Statistician with the Vanuatu department of Fisheries and am now a campaigner with the Australian Wilderness Society.

Graeme Noll
Graduate Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology

I started my degree in 2003 and am currently employed by Natural Resource Services, a consulting company, which does environmental monitoring for the public and private sector.

The degree gave me the skills to design scientifically defensible sampling procedures. These sampling procedures have been of great use in my work and this knowledge has helped me design sampling procedures for companies like Zinifex in Port Pirie. The written & verbal skills that are taught through out the course are second to none and are an asset when communicating with clients. The skills gained in completing this degree are applicable to many fields not just the marine environment making graduates more employable.

Trish Lavery
Graduate Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology

TrishI have enjoyed studying at Flinders University. I have always found Flinders to be a very supportive and encouraging environment, which has given me the courage and confidence to pursue my dream of researching marine mammals such as whales and dolphins.

As an undergraduate student at Flinders I was able to participate in unusual and exciting courses. During my time at Flinders I also undertook an exchange program where I travelled to Malaysia and studied at the Penang University of Science for six months. I had a fantastic time on exchange, where I learnt to interact more respectfully with other cultures and made life long friends.

The University is very supportive and helpful in encouraging interdisciplinary studies. This allowed me to conduct a complex honours project combining knowledge from the fields of marine biology and medical science, by examining the health impacts that are associated with heavy metal pollution in South Australia’s dolphins. I was surrounded by professional medical and biology staff who helped me immensely and encouraged me to pursue my ambitions. Recently I was awarded a scholarship from the government to commence my PhD at Flinders University. I am looking forward to starting a new area of research, and I’m sure my studies at Flinders will continue to be as fascinating, challenging and exciting as always.

Bachelor of Science in Nanotechnology

Tyler Raeside
Graduate Bachelor of Science in Nanotechnology

TylerThe degree provides that 'little bit more' than a traditional science degree and is at the forefront of many research opportunities both domestically and internationally. Flinders has a nice campus atmosphere, friendly lecturers and an established reputation in the Nanotechnology field. The course starts off with a broad focus and then allows you to narrow down to specific areas that you have an interest in. The subjects I have enjoyed the most are those that relate to the physics of surfaces and surface analysis techniques such as Quantum Phenomena, Optics and Lasers and the Nanostructures topics. Overall I rate the teaching at Flinders at a very high standard.
