About the Course
What is Medical Science?
Medical Science aims to solve problems related to human health. This involves
research in basic areas such as physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and
pharmacology. In addition, medical science looks to develop new strategies for
treatment of health problems, and importantly, evaluate these strategies and
treatments. At Flinders University, the Bachelor of Medical Science degree aims
to produce graduates who can work in basic medical research in scientific
laboratories, or take further studies in a variety of health related fields.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will find career opportunities in diverse areas such as medical
research carried out in universities and government and industry-funded
organisations, the pharmaceutical industry, government regulatory industries,
industry-based biomedical companies, and diagnostic laboratories.
Graduate-entry Medicine
One objective of the course is to provide students with appropriate knowledge
and skills for careers in medical science or to apply to enter the university's
graduate medical program. This is reflected in both its content (strongly
biomedically oriented) and teaching style (often in small classes, with an
emphasis on problem solving and analysis and presentation of data) which is
appropriate for students who plan to take the Graduate Australian Medical
Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
Admission to the Bachelor of Medical Science does not guarantee a place
in the medical program. No preference is given to particular degrees or
universities.

Your Career section of the Flinders' graduate careers website.

What Will I Study?
The topics specific to Medical Science combine different approaches to learning
and progressively cover key elements such as teamwork, verbal communication,
critical thinking, problem-solving, hypothesis development and testing, and
preparation of a grant proposal and business plan for research.
In first year you'll study Biology, Chemistry, the specially developed topics
Professional English for Medical Scientists and Skills for Medical Scientists,
and elective topics chosen from Computing, Physics, Legal Studies and Chemistry.
Second year includes Human Physiology, Laboratory Skills, Basic Metabolism,
Molecular Biology, a further Skills for Medical Scientists topic and studies in
chosen specialist disciplines.
At least one specialisation is taken in third year, along with studies focused
on Molecular and Cellular Biology and research design, enabling you to further
develop your knowledge of experimental and statistical methods. Students may
complete a professional placement.
Eligible students can proceed to Honours (Bachelor of Science) in their chosen
areas of specialisation.
The full
program of study, including topic descriptions, is set out in the Course
rule and topic information for this degree.
Why Study Medical Science
at Flinders?
This is an innovative and flexible degree providing exciting options for
students interested in a wide range of careers in the medical and health
sciences. It offers:
- a specialised program for those seeking to work as medical science
professionals in such areas as biochemistry and molecular biology, chemistry,
microbiology, neuroscience and physiology, nutrition, and pharmacology and
toxicology.
- an appropriate basis for postgraduate studies in radiology, pathology,
pharmacology and other fields.
- a preparation for the graduate-entry medical program at Flinders.
- the option to gain a grounding in medical science then change to more
specialised studies during the course.
The course emphasises the fundamental sciences that underpin virtually all
fields of medical science. It differs from traditional courses in biomedical
science by offering a broader range of specialisations and new topics that focus
on the professional skills required to gain employment in any field of medical
science.
The formal
course aims are set out in the Course rule and topic information for this
degree.

students are advised to discuss their proposed programs with the professional
registration authority and relevant professional associations in their home
country before commencing studies.
Required Background
Students can enter the Bachelor of Medical Science from any background.
First year topics in the degree do not require any specific knowledge of
science, though a background in high school chemistry would be advantageous.
Students who have matriculation Chemistry would expect to enrol in 1st year
Chemistry in the 1st year of the degree.
Those who have not completed matriculation chemistry would expect to enrol in
Introductory Chemistry in the 1st year of the degree.
After successfully completing their 1st year studies, both sets of students
would progress to the same topics in the 2nd year of the Bachelor of Medical
Science.
Transferring Credit
Credit transfer arrangements are in place for applicants who have successfully
completed certain TAFE courses.
Applications for credit will be considered on an individual basis, and
application can be made through the normal channels of applying for status.
An Application for Credit
form and relevant policies are available on the web.
