About the Course
What is Environmental Science?
Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program that combines biology,
earth science, and chemistry. Environmental Science applies scientific
techniques and solutions to issues of ecosystem sustainability. At Flinders
University, Environmental Science uses state of the art technologies (including
computer simulation and prediction, forensic identification, and other cutting
edge tools and methods), to train professionals for careers in this critical
field.
Career Opportunities
There is a great variety of career opportunities in Environmental Science
ranging from international environmental consultants to environmental officers
with local catchment boards. Environmental scientists work in either public or
private sector organisations such as the CSIRO, EPA, Catchment Boards, the
Department of Water - Land and Biodiversity Conservation, environmental
consulting firms and non=government organisations such as Greening Australia.
Most career opportunities allow for a combination of field work, laboratory
analysis and computer simulation. The specialisations in Environmental Science
offered at Flinders reflect growing areas of concern both within Australia and
internationally, providing increasing employment opportunities. To find out more about the jobs this degree can lead to, go to the Your Career section of the Flinders' graduate careers website.

Combining Degrees
Environmental Science / Innovation and Enterprise
Adds an additional year to
your full-time study program.
If you want to boost your business, management, enterprise and communication skills, and undertake a concentrated period of practical work experience, consider combining
Environmental Science with Bachelor of Innovation and Enterprise (Science and Technology) (BIE).
You’ll graduate with two degrees. More importantly, you’ll increase your immediate attractiveness to employers and your potential to become a business leader. You will need to apply for both the
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and the BIE via SATAC.
What Will I Study?
First Year subjects will include biology; hydrology and geology; and
oceanography and meteorology. In Second and Third Years students will:
- work in small interdisciplinary teams;
- investigate specific environmental problems such as river salinity, land
and water contamination, coastal dune management, land and coastal ecosystem
impacts, marine bioproductivity and its relation to global change; and
- hands-on projects in a variety of field settings and in state of the art
laboratories.
Specialisation include:
- Coasts & Catchments, which trains scientists in coastal and catchment
hydrology and ecology;
- Environmental Forensics, which equips graduates with the necessary
forensic skills to identify and trace the source of environmental
contamination; or
- Global Water Resources, which trains scientists to understand the
interactions, relationships and cycles between water, ecosystems and the
environment
The
full program of study, including topic descriptions, is set out in the Course rule and topic information for this degree.
