Postgraduate Coursework in Information Technology (Computing)
(Mid-year entry
application closing date: 25th July 2008)
- Graduate Certificate in Information Technology (Computing)
- Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (Computing)
- Master of Information Technology (Computing)
Information technology is now relevant and integral to almost every workplace
situation. Techies may run the programming side of things, but those who work
with them need to have a deep understanding of them, and collaborate with them
for the sake of their organisation. Those who apply technology in research need
the knowledge to choose and manage appropriate tools for their work. If you fit
into these scenarios, then these postgraduate courses maybe just right for you.

About the Course
Why Study Information Technology
(Computing)?
These
information technology courses are enablers towards many different destinations.
If your work discipline requires intimate collaboration with and knowledge of IT
you will find just what you need right here. Previous students in this course
have bachelors degrees in nursing, English, biology, social sciences and many
others.
The nursing
co-ordinator who runs the hospital schedule, the immigration official who
manages the entry database, the biologist who relies on complex statistical
packages, the operations manager of a consultant engineering firm - they are but
a few examples of those who need to make their computing system work for them,
not against them.

What Will I Study?
The Graduate Certificate in
Information Technology (Computing)
aims to provide graduates from other disciplines with an introductory level of
education in core IT knowledge and skills. The Graduate Diploma takes that a
step further to provide those graduates with a body of core knowledge and skills
in IT. The Masters aims
to extend the core knowledge and skills to an advanced level. When you graduate
you will:
-
be able to design, implement and manage
network-based information systems
-
understand the strategic role that
IT plays within the collective operation of your organisation
-
be able to play a leading role in
facilitating your organisation’s mission through appropriate
organisation-wide IT
-
be able to lead projects in the
audit, design, development and proactive maintenance of your organisation's
IT systems and services
-
have developed technical skills in
analysis, design and implementation of IT with a particular focus on
organisation-wide and web-based systems
-
understand the issues and
practices relating to the management, quality assurance and strategic
planning of such systems
-
have demonstrated professional
skills in information gathering, teamwork, project and task management and
communication.
The level of
competence in each area will depend on the award completed.
The courses articulate and the
sequentially developed topics allow progression through the three awards.
Candidates who have completed the Graduate Certificate are awarded credit towards the
Graduate Diploma. Candidates who have completed the graduate diploma are awarded
credit towards the Masters.
If you move on
to the Masters degree you will find a course customised to your needs. For each
student we try to find the optimal pathway. We use your background and
aspirations to tailor a program that will bring out the skills most useful for
you. For that reason, we encourage international students to bring ideas for
Masters projects from their own country. It is just as likely that a Masters
project will help you look at where you want to go in your career.

How can I use Information
Technology (Computing) in my
career?
Think of any
career path and you’ll find an IT influence. The manager with IT fluency is the
manager with the capacity to make the IT systems work to the business’s
advantage. The Masters graduate will be able to contribute professionally to the
management of an organisation’s IT infrastructure. These are courses for
professionals who work with IT at a high level rather than courses for IT
professionals.
The courses are
designed to serve the future of the students who complete them. Skills in many
IT areas are in short supply and these courses open many doors to many
possibilities. Long-standing graduates in computing may choose the Diploma or
Masters as a means of upgrading and extending their knowledge and skills in an
area that has dramatically changed in recent years. If you have a lot of
interaction with IT in your work and just want to communicate better with IT
people, the Certificate course might change your working life (for the better of
course).
The Masters in
IT is accredited by the Australian Computer Society.
